Baby Proof the Christmas Tree

Christmas is a great time for young kids as they anticipate the arrival of Santa Claus. However, it makes sense to plan ahead and eliminate hazards that come with the traditional Christmas Tree.

  • Place the tree in the safest place possible. A corner is a good place in case the tree starts to tip over.
  • Move all breakable ornaments high on the tree out of your child's reach. Also move candy canes, popcorn, or other ornaments that your child would be tempted to put in their mouth. These can be a choking hazard.
  • Use bricks or a heavy item to weigh down your tree stand to prevent tip-overs.
  • Move furniture away from the tree so kids cannot climb on it to reach higher on the tree.
  • Tie the tree with a cord to a nearby wall, or column to stabilize it.
  • Barricade your Christmas Tree from curious kids and pets. Surround the whole tree with a Play Yard enclosure or segregate a tree in a corner with a Baby Gate.
  • Baby proof the electric outlets that have tree lights plugged in.
