It operates by magnetic force, simply place the magnetic handle near the latch location and the latch will open. Tot Lok can be temporarily disengaged with a special switch. The two sided tape did not work on my cabinets. I had to hire someone to drill the holes and put in the screws. Now that they are in I love them. The cabinets look great without anything on the outside and my grandchildren can't get into them. I love the magnetid tot loks.

Well these were not very well made and they were weak my son 10 months old would bang the door back and fourth until it broke the latch or just failed and opened.
