The dangers of used and second-hand safety gates

KidSafe often gets calls from people looking for gate parts for a safety gate found at a garage sale or given to them by friends or family. While this can be economical it may not be the best idea.

Often critical hardware pieces are missing, the gate model has been discontinued or the gate is worn or operating incorrectly. When people take down their safety gates they often forget or don't include the small hardware pieces that hold the gate in place or latch the gate closed. There also may not be installation instructions on how to install the gate properly. And there is no manufacturers warranty with a used gate in case something goes wrong.

We feel the safest and wisest route is to get a new safety gate with a warranty, new parts, and installation instructions. It is worth the piece of mind for the little more you will spend for it.
